HIAS officials have lifted travel restrictions for most of the state, but some flights remain grounded, including those that depart from Maui and Honolulu.
The Hawaii Airline said the airline is advising customers to check the status of all flights through Thursday, including the Maui-Hilo and Honolulu-Hudson, as well as all international flights, in advance.
It was the first time Hawaii has had any restrictions lifted since the summer of 2015, when a state court ordered the U.S. government to return some of the islands’ land and water to Hawaii.
Hawaii has been under a federal order for the last six years that requires it to return its national park lands and waters to the state.
Maui and other Hawaii islands are home to some of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks, including Mauna Kea and the Oahu Skyway.
In 2016, Hawaii enacted a law that bars anyone from operating an airplane or vessel in Hawaii for at least two years after they were issued a pilot’s license or other authorization to operate.
On Friday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged states to follow Hawaii’s lead and work toward a solution to the problem.
“It is imperative that we continue to work towards the full restoration of the Hawaiian Islands as the natural and cultural resources of the nation’s islands are being protected,” Guterre said in a statement.
